Hello, to all my beautiful Ladies and handsome gents. I am here with another BLOG post tonight. I want to share with you all my experience with my 5 year old daughter on the night of 06/3/21.
It was about 5 O'Clock in the evening on this day, and I had begun to get dinner started on the stove. I planned to prepare some baked chicken and mixed vegetables. As I pranced about my kitchen, dancing to my inspirational music, I began to put on the water for the vegetables. I set the setting on Medium so that the water could circum to a boil quickly. I then began to put on my oven gloves, so that I could take the chicken out of the air fryer. As I began to open the fryer, my 5 year old daughter,Nyasijah, comes running from outside, into the kitchen and says "Mommy Mommy, I want Locs! Then she runs back outside, as if she did not just put something on my mind.
Dinner is done. I call my children in to wash their hands and sit down to eat dinner. We finish our meals and begin clean up of our dishes. I sweep the last crumbs from the kitchen floor and plop down on my comfy couch to watch some good ole' T.V. Low and behold, here comes Ny. "Mommy Mommy, I was serious about wanting dreads. I want to be like you and Big Dude"(my fiance). She says as she sits next to me on the couch. I looked her directly in her eyes and asked if she was sure that was the only reason she wanted to LOC her hair? She then stated, she was tired of getting her hair combed because it hurts and she thinks my hair and Big Dude hair is so pretty. Her exact words. I began to explain to her that this is not a temporary hairstyle and it is more of a permanent thing. I told her there is no more straight hair, or combing or brushing of her hair. She agreed. I proceeded to tell her the benefits of LOCKING her hair as to my reasons for LOCKING my own hair. She was even more interested. She asked if she could still wear beads and I proceeded to my hair vanity and pulled out a pack of beads specifically designed for dreadlocks decoration. She was so happy, she asked if I could get started on her hair right away!!! I was so touched by this request that I began the very next day.
Now mind you that my baby's hair is quite long. It reaches 2 inches past the middle of her back so this was going to be a LONG process. I was so prepared. I took out my tools and my locking creme and I began parting the sections of her hair in the way needed to achieve the desired style I was going for. 2 hours later i was finished and the result was Gorgeous!! She could not stop looking in the mirror at herself and touching her hair. She was smiling so hard I thought I heard her jaw bones crack. L.O.L. I interstood why she made the decision she had. I would have been tired of getting my hair combed to if it hurt no matter what was done to it, and the time it took just to compete one style, OMG. She no longer wanted to be portrayed as the girl with the long straight hair. She had seen a few of my clients come and get their hair re-twisted and had seen how pretty it was after I was finished with it. Then I made the decision to LOC my own after a conversation me and my husband had about why I wanted to LOC my hair. She had witnessed the different colors that could be added to the LOCS with dying it and she was so in love she of course asked me if she could dye her own. I told her I would think about letting her get the dye for children, once she showed me how well she was going to do in school seeing how this is going to be her first year.
So Yes, I totally agree with her decision and I am so happy for her. She loves her starter LOCS and I love that she knows she is still just as beautiful with her new LOCS as she was with her straight hair. It just tingles my heart.
If you are like me and has had to make the decision weather or not to honor your little ones request to LOC their hair, I say go for it. It is hair and will continue to grow .The benefits are endless. Stay tuned for my next post on the 'Benefits of Locking Your Hair'.
Anyways, below you will find a few pics of her new style and her huge smile!
